GNU: ANPP Leaders Protest to Yar' Adua

The All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) has made its grievances known to President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua over the insignificant positions offered it in the proposed Government of National Unity (GNU).

The ANPP leaders led by its National Chairman, Chief Edwin Ume-Ezeoke, on a visit to the President at the Aso Rock Villa on Tuesday, complained that the party had fulfilled it own side of the bargain, while the President and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had reneged on the execution of the arrangement.
The President however pleaded for more time, saying he needed more time to executive the plans.

The ANPP hierarchy had signed an agreement to work with the Federal Government last June, in the spirit of the GNU.

Senate Moves to Reclaim Bakassi

A major move aimed at a review of last year’s cession of the oil-rich Bakassi Peninsula to Cameroon by the Federal Government was broached in the Senate yesterday.
The Senate faulted the decision by the immediate past regime of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo to cede the Peninsula to Cameroon without ratification by the National Assembly, saying the act was unconstitutional.
Obasanjo had ceded the Peninsula to Cameroon on August 14, 2006 following the judgment of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) at The Hague on October 10, 2002 and a June 12, 2006 agreement at Green Tree, New York, United States, where the former president agreed to surrender the Peninsula.

Yar’Adua Tasks Monarchs on Constitutional Role

President Umaru Yar’ Adua has tasked traditional rulers to use the opportunity of their workshop in Abuja, to come up with well-researched proposals on their constitutional roles.
Yar’Adua said this will serve as their input into the proposed constitution amendment by the National Assembly, which has been slated for next year.
He said this in an address delivered on his behalf by the Senate President, David Mark, at the opening of a three-day National Stakeholders’ Workshop. He added that government would collaborate with traditional institution at all levels in the quest to provide good governance.
According to him, to do this effectively, their roles and functions must be specified and enshrined in the Constitution.

Yar'Adua meets top US officials

Abuja, Nigeria - Nigeria's President Umaru Yar'Adua Monday met two top US State Department officials in the capital city of Abuja, with the meeting focusing on bilateral relations between their two nations and America's interest in regional peace and security

US Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte and the US Assistant Secretary of State Jendayi Frazer are in Nigeria as part of a four-nation West African tour.

Negroponte told journalists after the meeting that other issues discussed included Nigeria's role in international peace keeping operations; Yar"Adua administration's reform programme and how the U.S. Could assist in its implementation.

'Yar'adua Not Angry With Tribunal's Verdict'

The national president of the Coalition of Nigerian Youth Forum, Alhaji Gambo Ibrahim Gujungu, has denied claims that President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua is angry at the verdicts delivered by the various election petition tribunals sitting in the country.

Yar'Adua opens Nigerian bourse automated trading floor

Nigeria's President Umaru Yar'Adua Friday formally opened the new ultra-modern automated trading floor of the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) in the commercial capital city of Lagos. Yar'Adua, who was accompanied by some officials of his administration, declared open the floor and rang the bell to signal the end of the brief ceremony.

Yar'Adua Tasks Army on Democracy

President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua has charged the Nigeria Army to be alive to its constitutional responsibility of safeguarding democracy and preventing any future attempt by some unguarded military officers from truncating the democratic process.

Yar'Adua to Inaugurate N5.6bn Treatment Plant

President Umaru Yar'Adua is expected to commission a N5.6 billion water treatment plant in Kano state by December.

The plant is said to be the largest in West Africa.


The treatment plant, built by Kano State government, is located in Tamburawa, near Kano and will boost water supply in Kano metropolis and its environs.

Director of Press to Kano State governor, Alhaji Sule Yau, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in New York.
